Learjet Cleared In Payne Stewart Mishap

After Six Hours, Jurors Turn Away Widow's Request For $200 Million

It took an Orlando, FL, jury just six hours Wednesday to decide Learjet wasn't at fault in the death of pro golfer Payne Stewart.

Stewart was on his way to Dallas from Orlando in 1999 to play in a tournament when something apparently went wrong with the cabin pressurization system. The aircraft, on autopilot, wandered through the American heartland until it ran out of fuel and crashed in North Dakota. Stewart was one of six people who died aboard the Lear 35.

Tracey Stewart's lawyer said, if the golfer were alive today, he'd have made approximately $200 million since the mishap. He blamed the crash on a faulty valve in the cabin pressurization system.

Learjet, in turn, blamed charter operator SunJet for the mishap, citing poor maintenance.
