Airborne 04.06.12: Farewell to Howard Pardue, Diamond DA52 and Terrafugia!

Also: Huerta Nom, Pinnacle BK, Raptor Data, Apollo 11, Solar Impulse, Pipistrel... and MORE!!!

Editor's Note: I hate to say it, but we have a goof in the script that was not caught during the VERY late night editing session that followed all our work at AEA2012. In the Diamond DA52 First Flight Story (Second Story), the DA52 flight test climbed to 17000 FEET -- not knots (obviously -- but its hard to make sure you're on the script with all the distractions of a LIVE convention hall). Please excuse the goof and know that the next time we have to go on the road, we'll look for a shooting location with as few distractions as possible. -- Aero-News/Airborne

For the first time, Airborne went on the road -- and despite all that we made Ashley do... she survived. In between a great number of arduous tasks -- such as doing her part in moving our gear nearly 1000 miles, shooting and producing nearly 10 hours of LIVE coverage of the AEA 2012 Convention and Trade Show, and doing dozens of online and audio stories about the greatest in new and innovative avionics technologies, Ashley STILL had to shoot and produce Airborne...

And she did so despite all the noise, distractions, craziness and difficulty of doing it all so far from home. But... the news waits for no one... not even ANN --- or Ashley. But get this... here it is and despite some really tough conditions, it looks great. Word to the wise, do not tell Ashley she can't do something... she'll prove you wrong.

It has been a big week for aviation. Of course, the 55th annual AEA convention was held this week in Washington, D.C., and ANN provided nearly ten hours of live coverage from the convention floor. But there was other news as well...

Aviation lost one of its icons this week. Howard Pardue went down in his F8F Bearcat on departure from his home field Wednesday. We don't have a lot of details, but you can learn what we do know in this week's program.

On the plus side of the ledger, Diamond flew its brand-new DA52 seven-place twin. The airplane is powered by two Austro Engine 180 hp turbo-diesel engines.

Also on the first-flight list, Terrafugia took to the sky in its production prototype for the first time this week. The roadable Transition aircraft was also on display at the New York Auto Show in the Big Apple.

We've also got stories for you about the Air Forces findings concerning the oxygen problems it's been experiencing with the F-22 Raptor, which have led to a couple of fleet-wide groundings of the airplane, Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos is about to undertake an expedition to recover the F-1 engines that boosted Apollo 11 on its historic trip to the moon, and an Italian company is bringing back the popular Sky Arrow sport airplane. Those stories and lots more aviation news are all on tap for you this week on Airborne!

As always, PLEASE keep sending us your feedback and ideas... you have no idea how important that is to us as we evolve the Airborne mission. As we listen to your critiques, we're getting a far better idea as to how to tweak and fine-tune future Airborne programming to fit your needs. We think you're going to like what we have in mind for the future.
