Ping Pong Ball Drop Misses Target

Pilot Deposits 3,000 On An Idaho Highway

A pilot who was supposed to drop 3,000 ping pong balls over a crowd at Blackfoot Pride Days in Blackfoot, ID last Saturday missed his target, and his cargo wound up scattered on an interstate highway instead.

The Associated Press reports that the balls were redeemable for prizes ranging from candy to $100 gift certificates. But the pilot misjudged his drop point, apparently not realizing that the balls would almost immediately lose speed and fall straight down after being released from the airplane.

Organizers quickly called off the contest, urging festival-goers to not risk running out onto the interstate to retrieve the balls. The prizes were distributed using an alternate method.

No charges are planned, but Blackfoot Police Chief Kurt Asmus told the Idaho State Journal that his department will work with the festival's organizers next year to prevent a repeat of the mistake.
