Dynon Avionics Announces New Engine Monitor Product

Uses Same Form Factor As EFIS And Can Back It Up If EFIS Fails

By ANN Correspondent Juan Jimenez

Avionics manufacturer Dynon Avionics has announced a new product at Sun-n-Fun 2004, an engine monitor that uses the same form factor and display as their EFIS product.

The new product features a complete selection of monitoring functions for reciprocating engines:

  • CHT
  • EGT
  • Oil Temp and Oil Pressure
  • Carb Temp
  • Fuel Pressure
  • Voltage and Amperes
  • RPM and Manifold Pressure
  • Fuel Capacity and Fuel flow

The unit also provides visual and audio feedback of alarm conditions, a clock and a datalogger. The interface to this last item has not yet been determined by the company - it could be a serial port, a flash card or something along those lines.

However, what has been finalized is the fact that the unit can be connected to the EFIS and act as a backup if the display on the EFIS fails. The internals of the EFIS must continue to operate for the engine monitor to be able to display the EFIS data.

Digital checklists are also expected to be part of the product offering.

Pricing has not yet been established, but is projected at $2300 for a four-cylinder unit with no fuel flow. Expect to add around $200 for fuel flow, and another $200 if your engine has six cylinders.
