Girls With Wings Hopes To Expand The Event To Other Cities
The first annual Girls With Wings Aviation Inspiration Day drew
over 250 people to Flemming Field in South St. Paul, MN, Saturday,
where they participated in activities such as tours of the CAF
museum with rides on WWII aircraft and vehicles, aircraft static
displays, a free lunch courtesy of airplane float manufacturer
Wipaire, and much more. The event was held in conjunction with the
Commemorative Air Force.
The highlight of the day’s event were four sessions of up
to thirty girls of the Girls With Wings presentation, an
interactive lesson on “everything” a girl needs to know
to be a pilot. Although this popular presentation has been given to
over 3000 girls, this is the first time the presentation has been
followed by actual airplane rides where the girls can take the
controls. A "Young Eagles" pilot from EAA Chapter 1229 said "it was
the first time that I saw the majority of the girls not there just
because they were dragged along with a brother. It was great to see
such self-confidence in the girls." The organization would like to
especially thank the Fleming Field Airport Association and Dave
Sniadak of Axiom Marketing for their support and promotion of the
event. And because of the overwhelming response of the adults, like
Leslie Snow, who wrote us to say, “My granddaughter keeps
telling me that she is going to remember that day for the rest of
her life,” they say they intend to look for opportunities
around the country to repeat this event.
Girls With Wings, Inc., uses women who are involved in aviation
to inspire girls to achieve their full potential. Website
activities and inspirational stories of women in various fields of
aviation motivate girls to pursue their own skyward adventures.
Fundraising for outreach activities is done through the sales of
Girls With Wings merchandise designed to let everyone know
“Yes, Girls Can Fly!”
