P-51 Down July 4, Two Fatally Injured

Warbird Had Just Departed Durango-La Plata County Airport In Colorado

A P-51D Mustang went down just after takeoff from Durango-La Plata County Airport (KDRO) in Colorado on July 4 resulting in the fatal injury of the two people on board.

The identities of those fatally injured has not been released. The Denver Post reports that, according to witnesses, the plane had just gotten airborne when it suddenly veered to the left and went down on County Road 309A which follows the airport perimeter. It reportedly continued on another 100 yards before coming to a stop in an open area.

La Plata County Sheriff's spokesman Dan Bender said the plane suffered "catastrophic damage."

FAA records indicate that the plane was owned by Bridgwood Holdings of Durango, CO.
