NYT Editorial Board Makes Case Against ATC Privatization

Says There Is 'No Credible Evidence' That Private System Would Be Better

The editorial board of the New York Times has come out against the provision in the latest FAA reauthorization act to privatize the nation's air traffic control system.

According to the editorial, only Canada and Britain use truly privatized ATC, and their systems are much smaller. And the privatized systems have seen cost increases above those experienced by the US over time, according to the editorial. Germany and France use government-owned companies, the editorial notes.

The editorial board also holds that the AIRR Act will slow implementation of NextGen. And it takes issue with the granting of air traffic control facilities such as towers and equipment worth billions of dollars to the non-profit company that would be established to run the system free of charge.

For those reasons, and others, the Editorial Board of the New York Times says that it "makes no sense to remake a system that is not broken."
