Westpac's Rescue Helicopter Comes To The... Rescue

Well, It Did. Twice.

Representatives with New Zealand's Westpac Rescue Helicopter service tell ANN the Wellington-based helo continues to earn its keep, coming to the aid of two persons this weekend.

At around 1:00 Saturday afternoon, the helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was called to a four wheel bike accident near Mount Mabel in the Wairarapa. The man injured in the accident was unsure of his exact location... but after a short search, and with his help talking the crew in via cellphone, the man was located.

The 21 year-old man sustained back injuries when he rolled nearly 100 feet down a hillside.

"Fortunately we were able to land nearby the injured man," says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Keith Frewen. "It was very windy and winching would have been extremely difficult in those conditions."

The man was treated at the scene, and then transported to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department, where he is still being assessed and treated.

Just four hours later, the helicopter was called to the Waikanae Golf Club where Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics had re-started the heart of a woman who had suffered cardiac arrest.

The 35 year-old woman fell ill at the golf course, and once her heart was re-started needed urgent transport to Wellington Hospital so the rescue helicopter was requested.

The woman is in Wellington Hospital in a serious condition.
