Icelandair Parts Ways With 45 737 MAX Pilots

Anticipates That The Grounding Of The Airplane Will Be Lengthy

Icelandair anticipates that the Boeing 737 MAX will be grounded for an extended period of time, and is taking steps to "minimize the impact on its passengers."

The carrier has dismissed 45 737 MAX pilots, according to a report from aviation24.be. The layoffs include 21 new pilots who were still in training to fly the airplane, and 24 pilots who began their training last fall. The dismissals were announced at a training session with a group of pilots.

To maintain its seat capacity, Icelandair has leased an additional Boeing 767-300 airplane. The carrier began implementing the changes almost immediately, and affected passengers were being contacted by the carrier.

Overall, the grounding of the 737 MAX has decreased the airline's seat capacity by 5 percent for the summer months against its projections, but there are still 10 percent more seats available than Icelandair offered last year, according to the report.
