New Zealand Pilot Thinks He Hit A Cow On Takeoff

Animal Has Not Been Located, But Airplane’s Landing Gear Was Damaged

A pilot on takeoff from an airstrip on a farm in Pahiauau in New Zealand thinks he may have hit a cow early last Sunday morning.

The pilot said he struck something as he departed the ground which damaged one of the wheels of the airplane, which was not specified in a story appearing from NZ Newswire. The pilot flew the damaged plane to Feilding, where he made a landing with just two wheels, according to a police spokesman. "It came in because it was either completely missing a wheel or the wheel was that damaged that it was inoperable," the spokesman said.

But if a cow was hit by the departing airplane, it likely got the worst of the encounter. "We don't know about the cow, we don't know where it is," the spokesman said.

There were no injuries, other than potentially to the cow, reported in the incident.
