Will Design And Develop Environmental Control And Life Support Systems
UTC Aerospace Systems is supporting the development of Boeing's CST-100 Commercial Crew Transportation System, which won a $4.2 billion Commercial Crew Transportation Capability Contract (CCtCap) from NASA on September 16, 2014.
UTC Aerospace Systems is responsible for the design, development, qualification and production of components for the Environmental Control and Life Support Subsystem (ECLSS) on the CST-100. This comprises major portions of the Air Revitalization System and the Pressure Control System, which includes the cabin fans, heat exchanger, a carbon dioxide removal system, trace contaminant control, valves and regulators, and a smoke detector. The life support system is designed to sustain life and provide an earth-like atmosphere for the astronauts as they travel in the vehicle. Also included in the ECLSS subsystem is the Active Thermal Control System with a liquid cooling loop comprising a pump package and sublimator heat rejection device, which ensures that the cabin is maintained at optimal temperatures as the vehicle is subjected to the extreme temperatures of outer space.
UTC Aerospace Systems is using state-of-the art tools and processes, including additive manufacturing to provide affordable, comprehensive design, integration, qualification and production for the CST-100. Delivery is due in 2016 for a 2017 flight to the International Space Station (ISS).
The CST-100 adds to a long list of NASA Space programs that UTC Aerospace Systems supports, including the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems on the ISS, the space suit and the Orion spacecraft. Its hardware is paramount to survival in harsh environments.
