North Carolina Lawmakers Ponder Laser Pointer Law

Legislation Would Make It Illegal To Point Lasers At In-State Flights

It's already illegal to point a laser at an aircraft on an interstate flight. But what about those that begin and end within a particular state?

North Carolina legislators are on top of it. The State House Thursday approved a measure that would make it illegal to point a laser at any moving airplane -- no matter where it comes from or where it's going.

“This is already a federal offense if you're on an interstate flight but this will plug a little gap in the law for planes which are taking off and landing in North Carolina and it's something we need to have in our arsenal if we find somebody doing this,” said Rep. Joe Hackney (D-House Majority Leader). He was quoted by the North Carolina News Channel in Charlotte.

Approval by the House means the bill will most likely go to the governor's office. The state senate has already approved a similar measure.
