Texas A&M Black Hawk Accident Claims Second Victim

Army National Guard Soldier Served In Iraq

Last week's downing of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on takeoff from the Texas A&M campus has claimed a second life.

A spokeswoman with Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX told The Associated Press that Sgt. Charles C. Mitts, 42, of Spring, TX died January 15, two days after the helicopter was felled for as-yet unknown reasons.

As ANN reported, one crewmember -- later identified as 2nd Lt. Zachary Cook, a recent A&M graduate -- was killed when the helicopter crashed on takeoff from a field near the Corps of Cadets quad at the university. Witnesses said the helo entered a rotational spin shortly after takeoff.

Three others onboard the Black Hawk were injured. The helicopter was the last of five helicopters to depart the field, as part of a training exercise.

Mitts, a member of the Texas Army National Guard, served in Iraq from 2006 to 2007.
