OH Paraglider Uninjured After Tangle With Power Lines

Spends Eight Hours Suspended In The Air

It's certainly not how we'd like to spend the night -- about 150 feet off the ground, strapped to a paraglider tangled in power lines. But that's exactly how 52-year old Mike Farrell of Loveland, OH, spent one of his nights last week.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Farrell was flying near dusk Wednesday, when his paraglider hit two static lines, and wrapped around them. Fortunately, static lines do NOT transmit electricity... but to be safe, Duke Energy cut the electricity to all the lines near the scene, and then went to work with three cranes.

The hard part was trying to stabilize Farrell's aircraft while rescuing him at the same time... and it turned out one of the cranes wasn't tall enough. But, after eight hours... they did it. Crews on the tallest crane held the mangled aircraft in place, while the smaller two were used to free the man.

All the while, Farrell's wife was on the scene... keeping him company by talking with him on a hand-held radio. Farrell wasn't hurt.
