Winter Makes Its Presence Felt On East Coast

Flights Delayed Across The Country

A major winter blizzard that brought record snowfall to New York City over the weekend has also caused significant grief to travellers across the country.

New York City-area airports were closed Sunday as a record 26.9 inches of snowfall fell on the city. Further south, nearly 23 inches of snow fell on Baltimore.

Flights scheduled to depart from airports as far away as California and England were cancelled Sunday as the East Coast blizzard's effect tumbled through the domestic air travel system like so many dominoes.

The closer to the east coast you looked, the more flights were cancelled or significantly delayed -- with over 100 flights reportedly cancelled at Dallas-Fort Worth International and Atlanta-Hartsfield alone.

John F. Kennedy International was expected to reopen for business on a limited basis Sunday afternoon, with LaGuardia opening at 6 am Monday. New Jersey's Newark Liberty International was open as of 5:30 pm local Sunday, according to the Port Authority's website.

Baltimore-Washington International was also open Sunday night, although many flights up and down the Northeast Corridor were cancelled or delayed.

Passengers are encouraged to check flight schedules with their respective carriers prior to heading for the airport.
