Student, Instructor Lost In FL Duchess Accident

Pilot Reported Engine Trouble

A Beechcraft BE76 Duchess went down in Florida Wednesday during an apparent emergency landing attempt, killing a student pilot and his instructor.

Authorities believe the light twin (file photo of type, below) was attempting to land at Spruce Creek, a Daytona Beach fly-in community. The two departed Daytona Beach International to practice approach procedures about an hour-and-a-half before the pilot reported engine trouble.

The flight instructor, 25-year-old Daniel Monroe, died at the scene. His student -- Daniel Richman, a 37-year-old Canadian citizen -- was cut from the burning wreckage by a homeowner who witnessed the crash. He was airlifted to a local trauma center... but later died from his injuries.

The NTSB was on the scene Wednesday evening to begin its investigation.
