Airborne 01.28.19: SpaceX 'Test Hopper', Super Bowl TFR, Great Yarmouth AirShow

Also: Textron 4Q, Bombardier Global 7500 Aircraft Wing Program, Homebuilt Aircraft Council, Passenger Sues United

High winds at the SpaceX launch complex in Texas blew over the "test hopper" rocket that is a prototype of the spacecraft the company hopes will one day carry people to Mars. Winds gusting to more than 50 miles per hour blew the upper section of the rocket to the ground.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk says the damage will take "weeks" to repair. The prototype was never intended to be launched into orbit, but rather to conduct a series of test flights to altitudes of up to 16,400 feet. The portion of the test article that was damaged is the fairing, or nose cone. One resident described the winds as being similar to a hurricane. The FAA will establish airspace restrictions affecting UAS operations January 31 to February 3, 2019 centered on Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA due to pre-Super Bowl and Super Bowl activity. UAS operations are authorized within the defined SSI airspace if in compliance with published requirements. The FAA recommends that all aircraft operators check NOTAMs OFTEN for mandatory airspace restrictions prior to operations within this region. The Great Yarmouth Air Show will not be returning in 2019. The group organizing the event made the announcement on Facebook. "Unfortunately we will not be holding an airshow in 2019 however we will be looking at options for the future we will keep you posted on this page," the post read. The inaugural Great Yarmouth Air Show was held last year. The event drew about 180,000 people and brought in revenue of about $197,000. But the cost to stage the show was estimated at $954,000. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
