Source: ESA science director David Southwood, on the space agency's decision to send a probe to examine Venus. Despite the planet's harsh temperatures exceeding 850 degrees Fahrenheit, and an atmosphere composed of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, scientists expect data collected by the Venus Explorer probe will help them determine why a planet basically similar to Earth -- in size, mass, and composition -- evolved so differently.
