Not Everybody In The Air Ambulance Business Is Making A Killing

Nebraska's Star Care V King Air Grounded By Budget Woes

Increasing costs are blamed for a decision to ground a fixed-wing air ambulance operated by two Lincoln, NE, hospitals. While the Star Car V helo will continue to fly, the company's King Air 200 isn't going anywhere soon.

The 15 or so patients who are flown by that King Air every month won't notice much of a change. They'll be served by Sioux Valley Intensive Air/Trauma One, based in South Dakota.

Operating Star Care V's King Air 200 puts BryantLGH Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center about $800,000 in the red each year. Rather than continuing the subsidies for fixed-wing operations, the two hospitals have decided to use Trauma One.

The South Dakota firm will fly missions outside the Star Care V helicopter's 140 mile range. Trauma One, founded in 1977, operates two King Airs and one helicopter. Together, they fly 1,300 missions a year. In contrast, there were only 184 fixed-wing operations staged by Star Care V last year.
