Conditions Improving; Fossett Could Fly Soon

Meanwhile, Global Flyer Still Being Prepped In Kansas

It looks like Steve Fossett's nonstop, solo flight around the world in the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer jet may finally get off the ground at the end of the week. Fossett and Virgin Chairman Richard Branson announced Monday that improved flight conditions may allow for the record flight to launch on Friday, February 25, or Saturday, February 26, subject to ground, weather and jet stream conditions.

The single Williams FJ44 engine-powered jet was designed by Burt Rutan and built at Scaled Composites, Mojave, California. Fossett's 80-hour flight, postponed several times since January due to poor flight conditions, will begin and end at the Salina (Kansas) Municipal Airport. Some key team members were reportedly en route to Salina Monday, and the whole team is working towards the possibility of a Friday take-off, according to the Global Flyer website.

Mission control will confirm the actual launch date soon, according to the report.
