FreeFlight 5G Tolerant Radar Altimeters Receive TSO Certification

Enter the RA-6500 and RA-5500 TERRAIN Series

FreeFlight has announced FAA TSO certification of its RA-5500 and RA-6500 TERRAIN series radar-altimeters. The clean-sheet devices will provide aircraft operators the 5G-tolerant, highly-precise radar-altimetry critical for safe approach and landing operations in both RF-dense urban environments and mountainous terrain. The uniquely capable devices allow pilots and aircrews to safely operate aircraft even in close proximity to 5G cellular towers.

FreeFlight president Anthony Rios states: “In 2019, foreseeing the interference to radar altimeters from C Band 5G telecommunications, we launched an innovative, clean-sheet radar-altimeter design to provide protection from signal interference. We are proud to have achieved TSO certification, which allows us to better serve our industry with a modernized, rugged, and flexible radar-altimeter solution that currently does not exist in the market.”

Designed and built with an eye toward the commercial transport, cargo, business, general aviation, military, rotorcraft, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sectors, FreeFlight’ TERRAIN series radar-altimeters afford users accuracy, durability, and volume-reduction of up to sixty-percent over competing units.

The TERRAIN series features an altitude measurement range of up to 2,500-feet AGL, and a service-ceiling of 55,000 feet. The units’ small-size and dual ethernet/analog ARINC 552 connectivity facilitate easy installation in a wide range of new and legacy aircraft. Both the RA-5500 and RA-6500 support existing antennas, control heads, and cabling. For additional display options, FreeFlight offers the RAD45 standalone indicator, which meets EASA AMC1 SPA.NVIS.110(b) guidelines.

Mr. Rios adds: “We have a considerable backlog of orders from operators and OEMs, particularly the Advanced Air Mobility segment. Now having the TSO certification, we are ready to begin product shipments. This is good timing considering the accelerating deployment of 5G networks across the country, which continues to challenge flight safety.”
