Flying On An AAL MD80? Bring Your Own Pillow

American Says Move Saves "Six Figures" On Cabin Cleaning

So you're boarding an American Airlines MD-80 for a short hop from here to there, looking forward to getting a little rest en route. You settle in your seat and ask the flight attendant for a pillow. Guess what? No pillow.

AAL this week pulled the pillows from all 334 of its MD-80s in a cost-cutting move aimed at speeding up the process of cleaning cabins.

"It will streamline our cabin service," said American spokesman Tim Wagner. In fact, the airline says it'll save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year without those pesky pillows.

Where will those thousands of pillows go? Is there a pillow heaven? Barring that possibility, they'll most likely end up on other AAL flights, Wagner said. As for the passenger looking for that soft place to put his head, Wagner suggested the seat's headrest should be just fine.
