Emirates Reports A 'Modest Restructuring' Following Decline In Profits

Carrier Says Only A 'Very Small' Number Of Employees Will Be Affected

Gulf carrier Emirates is undergoing a "modest restructuring" following a reported 75 percent drop in half year profits, according to news sources.

Reuters reports that, according to the airline, the decline can be attributed to slower than anticipated growth and increased competition. The carrier is now under pressure caused by weaker markets and a stronger dollar.

The plan includes moving some employees into new positions, according to a spokeswoman, who said in an email that only a "very small number" of the staff will be affected.

She said that about 1,000 employees have left the airline over the past three months, mostly due to "natural attrition." "Role and structure reviews in some areas impacted less than less than 40 staff over the same period," she said.

While the carrier has said it will cut routes, it recently announced that it was expanding its network with new flights to Zagreb and Newark starting this year.
