Cessna Highlights Innovative Improvements Combined With Innovative Marketing

Updates Airventure Media On Piston Programs

By Dave Juwel

Cessna opened AirVenture Monday with announcements concerning their piston line of airplanes, including the Grand Caravan EX, The TTX, and the Turbo Skylane JT-A (pictured).

The Grand Caravan will see a power boost thanks to a new 867 HP engine, which Cessna says enables it to have a 40% better climb rate. Vice President for Single Engine Airplanes Jodi Noah said that the production line is full and they've already delivered 13 units to Africa. She said there is a market for the EX in Russia as a commuter aircraft, and Cessna has 5 demonstrators flying throughout the world now.

Noah said the the Turbo Skylane JT-A (for jet fuel) is still undergoing certification, and that the company is already delivering the TTX to customers.

Cessna also has several programs in place designed to encourage people to start flying. They have developed a partnership with Kansas State University whereby any student going using the Cessna Pilot Center to get their license will get credit that can be applied to their college degree. They also have a very innovative program called the "Discover Flying Challenge" where  young people represent Cessna and the flying opportunity at events all over the country. They are attending charitable events, using social media, and speaking wherever they have the opportunity. One particular participant attended 31 events. In addition Cessna presented a check for $100,000 to the Young Eagles program.

These are commendable activities in an industry that is struggling to figure out how to rejuvenate aviation. The youth of America is one of the answers. They're the pilots and aircraft owners of the future, and Cessna appears to have recognized that.

But their marketing acumen doesn't end there. Cessna sponsors a NASCAR team, with a big #1 on the door. They support the driver by allowing him to use a jet to get from race to race. This is a classic example of using synergy to uplift your brand. Millions of NASCAR fans are now seeing the Cessna logo and name, and they might not have otherwise.

Improvements and marketing, a good balance for investing in your future. Good job Cessna!
