Thieves Make Off With Cessna 210 In Colombia

Plane Had Been Impounded After Entering The County Illegally

A Cessna 210 (similar aircraft pictured in file photo) which had entered Colombia illegally last December was stolen from an impound facility Sunday night. The plane reportedly departed from an airport in the northwestern region of Urbana, Colombia "in a hail of bullets," according to the Colombian air force and civil aviation agency.

Fox News reports that the Cessna had come into the country with a false Guatemalan registration. It was reportedly used for drug trafficking, and when it flew in from Honduras on December 11th of last year, it was intercepted and forced to land as Los Cedros airport in Urbana.

Sunday night, an armed group of men took control of the hangar where the airplane was being kept, started the airplane, taxied to the runway, and took off under fire. The Colombian air force said it tracked the plane until it crossed into Panamanian air space.

But despite an interdiction agreement with Panama, the plane slipped away. The air force says it currently has no information about where the plane could be, but is remaining alert and "will support Central American authorities in their search for the aircraft."
