SNC Adds Second Aircraft Modifications Complex In Huntsville, AL

Ground Broken On New Facility At Huntsville International Airport

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) continues to expand its aircraft service capacity in Huntsville, Alabama, breaking ground on a new aircraft modification and logistics support facility at the Huntsville (KHSV) International Airport. This will be SNC’s second modifications facility in the area, adding 60,794 square feet of operational space with the ability to house up to seven King Air aircraft at a time, or multiple rotary-wing aircraft.

“SNC has a long-standing foothold in Huntsville’s aerospace and defense industry and we are excited to continue expanding our strategic partnerships in the area,” said Tim Owings, executive vice president for SNC’s Integrated Mission Systems (IMS) business area. “This additional aircraft modification and upgrade facility represents SNC’s commitment to our key customers, including U.S. Army aviation and the community as a whole.”

Planned in preparation for future fixed- and rotary-wing program support, including STRATA-G and SNC’s bid for the Army’s Logistics Support Facility Management Activity (LSFMA) contract, the complex is expected to be fully operational in early 2019. The modifications facility, located directly at the HSV International Airport, will meet NFPA 409 and NAS 3306 requirements and offer key services such as innovative aircraft systems design, modification, upgrade and logistics support to military customers. It will also boast the added ability for on-site certification, inspection and certified maintenance. Once complete, the new state-of-the-art aviation complex has the potential to generate numerous additional skilled jobs in Alabama.

Best known as the leader in Army aviation and ISR systems, SNC has been operational and growing rapidly in Huntsville since 2012. Also well known publicly for its Dream Chaser spacecraft – a multi-mission space utility vehicle – the company supports and promotes expanding business in Aviation, Space, National Security and Defense through the delivery of strong and affordable aircraft systems solutions to its military customers as well as fostering key partnerships within the Alabama Space community.

SNC is currently working with Huntsville/Madison County and Airport officials as they apply for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensing to officially designate the HSV International Airport as a spaceport – making a Dream Chaser landing on one of the airport’s commercial runways possible for a future mission.

SNC supports approximately 400 employees, plus numerous other sub-contractors in the state of Alabama.
