Airborne State Trooper Fatally Injures Two In Shooting

Vehicle Led Authorities On A High-Speed Chase

A shooting incident involving a Texas State Trooper aboard a state-owned helicopter has resulted in the fatal injury of two people in a pickup truck that was fleeing the authorities. One other person was wounded, and six more were arrested.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon about 70 miles northwest of Brownsville, TX near the Mexican border. Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Katherine Cesinger said the car was leading a game warden in a high-speed chase being assisted by the DPS aircraft. The officer on board the helicopter reportedly opened fire on the truck, according to a report appearing in the Associated Press.

Cesinger said the shooting was "an enforcement action, but did not say whether the gunfire was the cause of the deaths or injuries to those in the truck. She said that the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, and had no other details.

The San Antonio News Express reports that the truck as allegedly involved in smuggling illegal immigrants across the border from Mexico.
