Bell Lays Off 30 Employees

12 Others Are Reassigned In The Company

Bell Helicopter has reduced it's production workforce by 30 employees, citing the ongoing recession which has reduced the demand for commercial aircraft. 42 positions had originally been targeted, but 12 of those employees have been reassigned within the company.

The Associated Press reports that Bell spokesman Thomas Dolney said the 30 who were let go could eventually find other positions in the company.

Gary Livingston, a member of the UAW 218 Bargaining Unit, which represents union production workers at Bell, said even the 12 who were reassigned represents a de-facto loss of jobs because "somebody else would have been hired" to fill them.

Dolony told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the layoffs were in no way connected with the labor negotiations with UAW 218 that concluded last month. He said the employees who were let go would continue to receive benefits to the end of September.
