Southwest Airlines May Stay with First Come, First Seated

Cattle Call Is Still In The Roundup

As many Aero-News readers know, Southwest Airlines is famous for the dreaded cattle-call technique to board passengers -- first come, first seated.

Last week, CEO Gary Kelly announced that the temporary summer experiment of being just like every other airline and assigning seats in advance -- was a resounding (drum roll...) mixed result.

The experiment was conducted on several flights departing San Diego, CA starting in July and concluded on Labor Day. The airline used a variety of boarding methods and Kelly reports to the Baltimore Sun that "Some boarding methods were a little faster, most were a little slower."

He said even passengers surveys were inconclusive. Some really like the scramble for seats, and some would like to have a ticket reserving their special place.

The Southwest CEO concludes that more research is necessary before the airline makes a final decision on exactly how passengers will get to their seats.
