Three Killed In Vintage Helo Crash

Piasecki HUP-1 Hit Power Lines On Takeoff

The owner of a Piasecki HUP-1 and two friends were killed when the vintage twin-rotor helicopter hit a power line on takeoff and went down.

Authorities believe Joseph Pike, the helo's owner, was at the controls when the accident occurred. The two friends have not been identified pending notification of relatives.

Inland News Today in Riverside, California reports that FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the helicopter, which was designed in the 1940’s, was actually built in 1951.

“It was originally for military use but was later purchased and had been operated as a civilian aircraft for quite some time," he said.

The HUP-1 was reportedly headed for the Fla-Bob Airport in Rubidoux for an air show.
