NBAA Plans Single-Pilot Safety Standdown Ahead Of Convention

Session Will Focus On Loss Of Control Inflight

How to avoid loss of control inflight (LOC-I) incidents and accidents, which are an increasing problem in general aviation, will be the subject of the National Business Aviation Association’s (NBAA) 2015 Single-Pilot Safety Standdown, which will take place on Monday, Nov. 16, the day before the start of the Association’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2015) in Las Vegas.

LOC-I accident and incident reduction is a priority not only for NBAA’s Safety Committee, which is organizing the Single-Pilot Safety Standdown, but also for the FAA, NTSB and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“This growing problem has been with us for some time, but it has not been sufficiently highlighted to gain the level of attention it deserves from our community," said Jim Lara, head of the NBAA Safety Committee’s Single-Pilot Working Group. "This does not just affect the single-pilot operator; this is a universal problem that all business aircraft operators must address. Therefore, we are focusing on just this one issue to get everyone to recognize, prevent and handle LOC-I issues. We want to make this a personal issue for all concerned.”

The 2015 Single-Pilot Standdown, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature presentations by several industry experts:

  • NTSB board member Earl Weener will provide an overview highlighting the severity of the LOC-I problem.
  • Paul “BJ” Ransbury, a LOC-I prevention and recovery expert with Aviation Performance Solutions, LLC, will discuss LOC-I scenarios and ways to prevent and recover from them.
  • Noel Duerksen, an engineer from Garmin International, will discuss current and future technologies that can be used to detect and recover from LOC-I events.

In addition, the standdown will feature the premiere of a custom-produced video, shot in an Embraer Phenom 300 Single-Pilot simulator, depicting a realistic LOC-I event, with Tom Turner of the American Bonanza Society facilitating the conversation around the LOC-I event presented in the video. Time will be provided for extensive discussion of the video, as well as the experts’ presentations.

There is a $40 fee for the standdown, which includes a networking lunch.
