Glasair Sets New Speed Record At Reno Air Races

Jeff Lavelle Outpaces Super Sports, Some Unlimiteds

Flying his Glasair III at the 2010 National Championship Air Races in Stead, Nevada, Jeff Lavelle set a blistering new Sport Class qualifying record, setting the bar up at 362.481 MPH.

Lavelle's speed is even more impressive when you realize that his Glasair's qualifying speed is not only faster than every one of the higher horse-powered aircraft that qualified in the "Super Sport Class", but it was also faster than over half (14 of 24) of the entrants in the Unlimited Class, which includes multiple P-51 Mustangs, a Fockewulf, a P40, and an F4U Corsair.

Not stopping with setting an impressive qualifying record, Jeff propelled his Glasair III to 1st place victories in every heat of the Sport Class races, including the Sport Class Gold race on Sunday. "I'm proud to be a part of putting Glasair back in the winner's circle - and I had a lot of fun doing it.  In years past, Lancairs dominated at Reno; however, for two years in a row now, Glasair has set the course speed record." said Lavelle after his recording breaking week at Reno.

Lavelle's Glasair III is a factory stock airframe powered by a twin turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540 engine developed by Grant Semanskee of Snohomish, WA. "Glasairs have long been known to be one of the best sportplanes on the market - strong and fast - but clearly we like winning the speed contest at Reno - for two years in a row now" said Mikael Via, President of Glasair Aviation.

The Glasair III kit is manufactured by Glasair Aviation in Arlington, WA.  The company is also well known for making the Glasair and the Sportsman 2+2, a four-seat, composite and metal general purpose airplane.
