White House Won't Back Bolden On Muslim Outreach Statement

Spokesman Says That Is Not Among Administrator's Assigned Tasks

White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs says President Barack Obama did not assign the new NASA administrator the task of reaching out to Muslim governments, contrary to Bolden's remarks in a televised interview with Al-Jazeera network.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden

The Associated Press reports that Gibbs said Monday that such outreach activities are not part of his job description, and that administration officials have spoken to him about the matter.

Bolden said in a recent interview with the Muslim television network that Obama had specifically tasked him to reach out to Muslim nations to encourage their youth to become more involved with math and science, and to "feel good about their historic contribution to science and engineering." The remark has been highly criticized by conservative activists and commentators.
