Airborne 09.09.19: Hall Wins Red Bull, AAL Sabotage, ERAU Piper NTSB Report

Also: Nat'l Airlines Council Of CA, American Rocketry Challenge, Viasat, EU Extends Deadline

That’s it... it's all over now. One of the coolest and most lauded aviation sporting events in the world has packed its bags and shut down... but not before giving Austrailian Red Bull Racer, Matt Hall, the ultimate bragging rights as he won the very last race in the series.

After four Red Bull Air Race World Championship podiums including three oh-so-near misses in second place, Australia’s Matt Hall finally took top honors at the Red Bull finale in Chiba, Japan on Sunday. In what can only be a truly outrageous black eye for commercial aviation, the result of a disgruntled union worker and an American Airlines mechanic has been arrested for the tampering and sabotage of a Boeing 737 that was in service and heading out on a trip when the damage was detected just minutes before departure. The aircraft had been scheduled to leave for Nassau, Bahamas from Miami, Fla. shortly with 150 passengers, when annunciators alerted the flight crew to issues affecting the airworthiness of the aircraft and more specifically, air data sensors. The NTSB’s probable cause report for the accident involved a Piper PA-28R airplane belonging to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) on April 4, 2018. The commercial pilot candidate and ATP-rated check pilot who were onboard the aircraft were fatally injured in the accident. According to the report, an airline transport pilot and a private pilot were performing commercial pilot checkride maneuvers, which included a touch-and-go landing. After the landing and during the climb, the airplane's left wing separated near the wing root and the airplane collided with terrain. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
