Governor Richardson Finally Gets His Wings

You Are Now Free To Move About New Mexico

The long battle over whether New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is entitled to a new aircraft appears to be over -- he's getting a Cessna Citation Bravo.

New Mexico General Services Secretary Edward Lopez Tuesday said he'd signed the purchase order for the $5.5 million aircraft, capable of reaching jus about any airport in the state within just 35 minutes.

Lopez said the Bravo represented a pretty good deal for taxpayers, especially when measured against the other options he researched: a 1993 Cessna Citation priced at $3.5 million and a 2000 Beechcraft King Air 350 selling for $3.6 million.

As ANN reported in March, the New Mexico Legislature approved $5 million for the purchase of a new aircraft after the state sold Richardson's old plane in February. The 1966 Aero Commander had been heavily modified for aerial photography work and, because it wasn't STC'd for the mods, had been grounded.

Richardson had previously tried to go around the legislature by ordering a $4 million aircraft, to be purchased with money from the state's highway fund. He gave that plan up in the face of stiff opposition.
