B-29 Doc Runs Engines For The First Time In 2016

First Flight Reported To Be Coming 'Soon'

After a long, cold Kansas winter, the team restoring the B-29 'Doc' rolled the iconic bomber out of a hangar and started her engines for the first time this year on Saturday, and the team says they are anticipating a first flight soon.

Warbird News reports that one of the final airworthiness requirements to be checked off the list was the installation of new tires on the airplane. The old tires had been mounted for 15 years and were no longer considered to be airworthy.

The engine run will be repeated with FAA inspectors on the premises "soon", which is expected to lead to the final sign-off by the agency clearing Doc for her first flight. But the FAA is not the only agency required to approve the flight. The airplane  B-29 will have to receive formal clearance from the Defense Department to permit the bomber to use the longer, non-joint-use runway at McConnell AFB to conduct the test flight program.
