DOD Confirms F-16 Pilot Killed In Iraq Crash

Airman's Remains Identified Via DNA Testing

CNN has confirmed officials with the Department of Defense determined the pilot flying an F-16CG fighter that crashed last Monday northwest of Baghdad was killed.

CNN reports Major Troy Gilbert's remains were indentified via DNA testing.

There is still no official word on what exactly brought the fighter down -- military officials wouldn't comment on whether the fighter was shot down. CNN's latest report indicates those officials are speculating Major Gilbert was unable to eject from the the aircraft and died in the crash.

Spokesmen did confirm insurgents were in the area at the time of the crash.

Major Gilbert was flying a mission in support of ground forces around the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah 20 miles northwest of Baghdad. The military reported he was engaged in low-level strafing runs before his jet went down.

His status was officially changed today from "duty status whereabouts unknown" to "killed in action."
