AMA Drone Report 03.23.17: New Canada Drone Regs, 'Anti-Drone' Race, Tiny Whoop

Also: SELFLY Camera-Kickstarter, Turtle Tracking Drones, Drones Save Lives!

The Canadian government has recently released new regulations for recreational drone operators that carry hefty penalties for violators... Even more so than those here in the US.

The new rules apply to aircraft weighing between about half a pound and 77 pounds being flown non-commercially. Under the rules, recreational drones may not be flown higher than 90 meters above the ground; closer than 75 meters from buildings, vehicles, vessels, animals, people/crowds; and closer than 9 kilometers from the center of any "aerodrome"... defined as anywhere that aircraft take off and land. The rules also prohibit flight in controlled or restricted airspace, within about 5.6 miles of a forest fire, or anywhere the aircraft could interfere with police or first responders. Positing that we need anti-drone instruments, the folks of the TU Delft Micro Air Vehicle Lab (MAVLab) will host the first ever anti-drone competition, DroneClash, before the end of the year. During this competition, participants use their own drones to take down as many other drones as possible. But... they also need to avoid a whole series of anti-drone interventions. A company operating out of a basement in Fort Collins, CO is making what may be some of the smallest FPV drones available. The Tiny Whoop quadcopters were born  of the mini-drone-racing trend. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
