Aero-TV: Aero-Political Chat - AMA on the Ups & Downs of ATC Privatization Fight

AMA has Concerns About Unconnected Language In The Bill Dealing With Model Aviation…

The previous FAA Authorization Bill contained a carve-out for model aircraft, basically preventing the FAA from establishing new rules regulating hobbyist flying them.

The AIRR act contains language that the Academy of Model Aeronautics says is "pivotal" to their organization, and Rich Hanson, president of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, told Aero-News CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell at AirVenture in July that the association is working with House Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster's office (R-PA) on refinements of the language that is important to moving forward and fully implementing the bill.

But as far as ATC privatization is concerned, Hanson said that he has a personal opinion on the rule, but the association has been largely neutral on the bill while supporting the provisions "that are relevant to our activity, and not so much in terms of privatization" which does not have a direct impact on the model aviation community.

Hanson said that the association was premature in signing on to a letter opposing privatization, and later, the board determined it should return to its neutral position, which caused some friction with the EAA. Hanson said there is a lot of crossover between EAA and AMA membership, and the association hopes to be able to continue the long-standing relationship between the two organizations.
