Congressional Leaders Urge OMB To Review FAA Small Airplane Certification Rules

Says New Rule Is Vital To General Aviation Community, South Central Kansas And Wichita

Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-KS) has sent a letter with six other members of Congress to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shaun Donovan, requesting an expeditious review of the FAA's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for small airplane certification regulations. Pompeo’s request comes as the deadline approaches for FAA to modernize and improve regulations for light general aviation airplanes. His bill, the Small Airplane Revitalization Act that Congress passed in 2013, requires FAA to publish a final NPRM by the end of 2015.

“Unfortunately, federal regulators are far behind in the rulemaking process for small airplane certification regulations," Pompeo (pictured) said in the letter. "At the very minimum, a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking must be published by the end of 2015, which is why my colleagues and I are requesting that OMB expedite a review of the FAA’s NPRM.

“Modernizing these regulations will allow small airplane manufacturers to do what they do best: build planes and get them in the air. Releasing this new rule is vital to the general aviation community and the many hardworking people of South Central Kansas and Wichita – the Air Capital of the World. Further delay is simply unacceptable.”

Representatives Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), Rick Larsen (D-WA), Sam Graves (R-MO), Todd Rokita (R-IN), and Rick Nolan (D-MN) also signed the letter.
