Spirit Airlines' First Hurricane Relief Flight Takes Off to Cancun

Operating At Least Three Flights To Hurricane-Devastated Resort

Spirit Airlines Thursday began rescues flight to and from Cancun, Mexico.

The airline said in a statement to Aero-news that it's working closely with the Mexican Government and Cancun Airport officials in order to take Spirit Airlines' customers out of the resort city pummeled by Hurricane Wilma.

The first flight took off at 1035 from Fort Lauderdale, with supplies and water, bound for Cancun to pick up the first 150 customers. Once in Fort Lauderdale, customers will continue on to their destination through Spirit's Fort Lauderdale hub. Spirit said it would operate two more rescue flights on Friday.

Spirit is planning to resume scheduled service to Cancun as early as Saturday.
