Germanwings Pilots Set To Strike Friday

Labor Action Set To Begin At 0600 In Germany

Pilots flying for the Lufthansa subsidiary Germanwings plan to strike Friday morning, grounding flights departing from German airports from 0600 to midday local time.

The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit said in a statement that it was staging the labor action over demands for better provisions for pilots near retirement age.

The French news service AFP reports that the union also said in a statement that "it is prepared to reach an agreement at any time to avert the strikes."

The union staged previous strikes in March and April, grounding thousands of flights and costing the airline about $79 million.

Lufthansa said in a statement that it "very much regrets this strike announcement and particularly the inconvenience it will cause Germanwings customers." The airline said it could not estimate how many flights might be affected.
