First Flight Of A320neo Planned For Thursday

Entry Into Service Still Expected In 2015

If all goes according to plan, Airbus will fly its A320neo for the first time Thursday, according to Airbus COO for customers John Leahy.

Fox Business reports that Leahy made the announcement at the ISTAT Europe conference earlier this week. The said that weather permitting, the flight will take place at 10:30 a.m. local time in Toulouse, France.

Airbus began taking orders for the re-engined single-aisle airliner in late 2010, and currently has about 3,250 of the airplanes on its order books. Qatar Airways is the launch customer for the airplane, which is currently expected to enter service in 2015.

Leahy said Pratt & Whitney is working on an upgraded engine for the A320neo which is expected to increase efficiency another two percent by 2019. Eventually, the A319 and A321 will also receive engine upgrades, but Leahy said the slow-selling A318, the smallest in the line, will not be re-engined.
