Veterans Barred From Enrollment In Arizona Helicopter Flight School

Department Of Veterans Affairs Says Yavapai College In Prescott Did Not Comply With Federal Regulations For The Program

The Department of Veterans Affairs has shut down new enrollment in a helicopter flight training program offered through Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ because of alleged violations of its rules regarding such programs.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the VA sent a letter to the college saying that the program did not meet the threshold of 15 percent of its enrollees being non-veterans. The GI bill states that any program it funds must be affordable enough that at least some students are willing to invest their own money, rather than being entirely funded by the federal government.

All 90 students in the helicopter flight training program offered by Guidance Aviation through Yavapai are veterans, according to the letter.

The letter follows an investigation by the paper into two such programs. The other is offered through Southern Utah University by Upper Limit Aviation.

Generally, when the VA suspends a program, currently enrolled students are allowed to finish the current term, but can only resume their programs when the school comes back into compliance.
