First Flight For Chinese J-20 Stealth Fighter

Demonstration Appears To Be Timed To Correspond With Gates Visit

The Chinese J-20 Black Eagle stealth fighter that is reportedly being developed as a rival to the F-22 Raptor has apparently flown for the first time, and the demonstration may have been planned to coincide with a visit by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Video has emerged on the Internet of the airplane taking off, making several passes over the runway at "Plant 132 aerodrome" in Chengdu, China, and landing. Defense News reports in their online edition that the flight lasted approximately 18 minutes.

Gates has admitted that earlier statements that the Chinese would not be able to field such a fighter for another nine years may have been based on outdated intelligence.

It is unclear what effect the first flight of the Black Eagle will have on the military talks with Beijing, or on a request by Taiwan for the F-16 fighters which has been on the back burner since 2006 due to Chinese pressure on the U.S.
