Apollo 17 Astronaut Advocates A Private Return To The Moon

Says Mining The Lunar Surface Could Prove Lucrative

The last person to set foot on the lunar surface says that private companies offer the best prospects for returning humans to the Moon, and perhaps setting up profitable mining operations there.

The Moon is rich in Helium 3, according to Dr. Harrison "Jack" Schmitt, who on the Apollo 17 mission became the only geologist to walk on the body. He says in his book "Return to the Moon" that it is a key destination for exploration, enterprise, and energy in the human settlement of space.

The Google Lunar X-Prize blog says Schmitt favors a private, investor-based plan for getting people back to our nearest neighbor with governments in a supporting role. He said that involving private companies is the only way that such an effort could be sustainable, and even profitable. (NASA Official Mission Portrait)
