Airborne 02.11.19: Red Arrows Tour, SpaceShipTwo Crew, Able Flight Record

Also: Aircraft Electronics Technicians, Astronics AeroSat, Commercial Crew Launch Dates, Mitchell Airport

The Red Arrows will fly to North America for the Western Hawk 19 tour after taking part in the Royal International Air Tattoo, at RAF Fairford, from July 19-21.

They will travel across the U.S. and Canada. "The Red Arrows are an international symbol of Britain and this landmark event will generate a significant amount of investment," said Defense Minister Mark Lancaster. Previous tours, which include China, Greece, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Pakistan and Bahrain, have led to the UK gaining as much as ten times in sales and investments as the cost of the tour. The Red Arrows will display at several US air shows, and areas with strong UK links, for the first time in more than a decade. U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao pinned FAA Astronaut Wings on Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo crewmembers, Test Pilots Mark “Forger” Stucky and Fredrick “CJ” Sturckow, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Thursday. Last year’s historic spaceflight marked the nation’s return to space on an American-made rocket, and paves the way for future travel to space with commercial spaceflight participants. This year's Able Flight scholarship recipients include an Army Lt. Colonel wounded in combat, four other veterans disabled due to accidents, and two women. Receiving scholarships are Lt. Colonel Daniel Gade (US Army-retired) of Virginia, Leslie Irby and Ignacio Montoya of Georgia, Will Bucher of North Carolina, Samuel Mahoney and Steven Martinez (US Marines-retired) of Wisconsin, T’angelo Magee of New Jersey (US Army-retired), Anthony Radetic of Alabama (US Army-retired), Joseph Moncalieri of Massachusetts (US Coast Guard), and Emily Hupe of California who is returning to train this year after illness forced a delay in 2018. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
