Aero-TV: Optionally Piloted Blackhawks! - Sikorsky Fulfills Visionary Promises

Extraordinary Progress Shown By Sikorsky's Innovative R&D Programs

ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell attended the 2014 convention of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and talked Jesse Lesperance, the special project manager for Sikorsky innovations.

When thinking of unmanned aerial systems it’s easy to visualize relatively small drones designed for special purpose use. That’s not exactly what Sikorsky has in mind.

Sikorsky brought a full-size helicopter to the convention to show that they have gone into the unmanned aerial system concept by developing systems to control already operational manned aircraft. Their system allows the Black Hawk to be flown by a flight crew, remotely controlled by an operator on the ground, or autonomously.

In the video you’ll see remote control operation of a full-size helicopter with a cockpit crew on board only to act as a backup system. Lesperance points out that the full mission capabilities of this kind of technology is yet to be determined. Campbell asked good questions and Lesperance provides fascinating details about the Sikorsky project. This is a video you don’t want to miss.
