Czechs Accept Apology For Plane Mixup In Turkmenistan

Tu-154 Held On Ground 14 Hours

Officials with the Czech Republic say they've accepted an apology from an aviation official in Turkmenistan, after a misunderstanding led to the grounding of a Czech military plane this weekend.

Deputy Defense Minister Martin Bartak was one of 49 Czech military and parliament leaders who were aboard the Tu-154 when it landed Saturday to refuel at the airport in Turkmenistan's capital of Ashgabat.

The Czechs had received prior permission from the Turkmen government to refuel in Ashgabat while en route from Afghanistan to Prague. But the plane's pilot says that permission was denied as the plane approached the Ashgabat airfield.

He landed anyway... and the plane was held on the runway for 14 hours before the group was allowed to refuel, and continue on its way.

Officials on both sides chalked the incident up to an administrative error.

"I anticipate that this misunderstanding will not have a fundamental influence on future relations between the Czech Republic and Turkmenistan," Bartak told Germany's DPA news service.
