South Bend Airport Rushes To Complete Expansion

Will It Be Ready In Time For Fans Of The Fighting Irish?

It's almost football season... and that means flocks of fighting Irish fans will soon clog the ramp at the airport in South Bend, IN.

That's nothing unusual... high-flying Notre Dame fans regularly cause an air traffic headache at South Bend. But over the years, fans of the Fighting Irish have gotten fighting mad over the delays and lack of parking space.

For instance, aircraft parking was a big problem at last fall's Notre Dame-USC game, when about 300 planes arrived all at once.

South Bend Airport Executive Director John Schalliol says expansion work on the big general aviation apron had been set for next summer but was pushed up because of the number of private aircraft expected for this season’s Notre Dame home games.

So now, construction workers are racing to finish the expansion of space for airplane parking before the first Notre Dame kick off. The Fighting Irish home opener -- September 9, against Penn State -- is expected to bring another big flock of planes.

Can they finish in time? We'll let you know.
